More buses to Jaffna to strengthen service

Ceylon Finance Today: The Cabinet has approved the request of Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) to purchase another fleet of buses worth Rs 288 million from Lanka Ashok Leyland, to strengthen the service in remote areas.

The government, through the 2014 Budget, gave Sri Lanka Transport Board Rs 500 million to cover losses and Rs 1,000 million to strengthen its fleet.

The fleet is made up of 80 two-door 35-seater buses worth Rs 288 million at a unit price of Rs 3.6 million.

Minister of Investment Promotion Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena in his recent visit to Jaffna, promised that on President Mahinda Rajapaksa's visit to declare open several projects there including the Jaffna Railway Station and Talaimannar Railway Station, he would give 10 buses to each depot to strengthen the service.

In April this year SLTB was granted Cabinet approval to purchase a fleet of 800 two-door 42-seater buses worth US$ 28.88 million at a unit price of US$ 31,100 and 1,400 semi luxury 54-seater buses worth US$ 47.74 million at a unit price of US$ 34,100 from Ashok Leyland of India.
